Levar Stoney is the 80th Mayor of Richmond, Virginia. He preceded Dwight Jones who also belongs to the Democratic party.
Levar was raised by his single father and grandmother. He completed his education from Yorktown, Virginia. Later he moved to Richmond, Virginia and began his political career.
Childhood and Family
Levar Stoney was born in Long Island, New York. He has one younger brother Marvis Stoney. After Levar and Marvis’ birth, their mother left them with their father.
Their parents never married he and his siblings were raised by his father and grandmother. Levar, his brother, and father moved to Yorktown, Virginia to stay with grandmother.
Levar’s father Luther Stoney did small jobs here and there to bring money home to raise the children. His grandmother was a retired domestic worker.
His father Luther Stoney passed away in 2011, he played a very important role in bringing Levar into politics.
Levar married Kristina Perry Stoney in 2012 and just after 4 years, they divorced in 2016.

Education
Levar completed his schooling from Tabb High School, Yorktown, Virginia. He was a quarterback on his school’s football team.
He completed his degree in public administration and political science from James Madison University in, Virginia in 2004. Being a natural leader he was elected as the president of the student body.
Career
Levar Stoney started his career by serving as a fellow at Governor Mark Warner’s office in 2004.
Then he went on to work as an organizer for John Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004.
In 2005, he worked for Creigh Deeds in Virginia Attorney General elections, which he lost.
From 2006 until 2009 he worked as a political director and executive director for the Democratic Party of Virginia.
In 2009 he worked as a consultant for an automotive company Green Tech. The company was owned by Democratic politician Terry McAuliffe.
In 2010, Levar started working as a deputy campaign manager for Terry McAuliffe gubernatorial campaign 2013. McAuliffe won the election and became 72nd Governor of Virginia.
Post McAuliffe’s victory he appointed Stoney as a Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia in November 2013.
In 2016 he announced his candidacy for mayor post of Richmond. He won the elections in 2016 and assumed the office on 1st Jan 2017.
He is the youngest Mayor of Richmond at age 35.
Controversies
In 2004 while campaigning for John Kerry’s presidential campaign, he and 5 of his colleagues were charged with slashing the tires of a vehicle which was used to drive Republican voters to the poll booth.
He first denied the allegation to the local police but later he confessed the crime to the FBI.
He was questioned by the committee of Virginia Republican lawmakers about his act and was pardoned as “an isolated, youthful mistake.
