Dan’s political career started in 2012 when he first ran for Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina against Democrat candidate Linda Coleman. He won the seat by a very thin margin of just 0.2% (6858 votes).
In the 2012 race, Dan received 50.1%(2,187,728 votes) of the vote share while Linda received 49.9%(2,180,870 votes) of the vote share.
In 2016 he ran for re-election against Linda. In re-elections, he received 51.87%(2,370,028 votes) of the vote share while Linda received 45.28%(2,068,741 votes) and Jacki Cole from Libertarian Part received 2.85%(130,236 votes) vote share.
In August 2019 Dan filed his nomination for the Governor seat of North Carolina. The Republican primaries were held on 3 March 2020. He won the primaries against Holly Grange with a massive margin of 89%(694,929 votes) while holy just got 11% of the vote share(86,150 votes).
